Despite being widely used and becoming increasingly popular in Brazil, the IUD is a contraceptive method that still raises questions in women of all ages. The intrauterine device, which we call an IUD, is a long-term method, in the shape of a T, and has some specificities: hormonal IUDs, either Mirena or Kyleena. And non-hormonal, copper- or silver-coated IUD.
Hormonals also serve to help control vaginal bleeding and replenish hormones. And the second prevent fertilization without affecting the menstrual cycle or ovulation, from the change in uterine secretion. In order for you to know more about this contraceptive method, the doctor and gynecologist Cesar Patez set aside some questions to answer. Check it out!
MAXIMUM: Can the IUD only be used in women who have already had children?
DR. CÉSAR PATEZ:“There is no impediment to placing the IUD in women without children. As long as she has already had sexual intercourse, has no evidence of uterine infection or suspected pregnancy, it is important to emphasize that before insertion we must request some tests, including endovaginal ultrasonography, to assess the size and position of the uterus. Thus, the most appropriate IUD can be chosen.”.
MAXIMUM: Can the use of an IUD interfere with a future pregnancy?
DR. CAESAR:“No, those who use the device and decide to get pregnant: they just need to go to their gynecologist to remove it. Since it is a very simple and painless procedure most of the time, fertility is restored shortly afterwards.”🇧🇷
MAXIMUM: Is it more effective than other methods?
DR. CAESAR: “No contraceptive method is currently 100% effective. Therefore, it is possible to get pregnant with the IUD and with any other device. The difference is that the IUD has one of the highest rates of effectiveness, that is, the chances of getting pregnant are very small , which may vary from 0.2 to 0.7%.”.
MAXIMUM: Does the IUD interfere with sexual intercourse?
DR. CAESAR: “It has a very fine thread, which is used to remove it when necessary, hardly causing discomfort to the partner during sexual intercourse, nor does it affect the woman’s pleasure.”.
MAXIMUM: Can IUD use change menstruation?
DR. CAESAR: “In the first cycles after placement, it is possible for the cramps and the flow to increase, but the tendency is for them to decrease over time. That is, when we are talking about the copper IUD. The hormonal IUD can make the flow lighter and decrease menstrual cramps most of the time.”.
