Bezos’ former housekeeper sued the billionaire

He claimed unsanitary conditions and demanded more than $9 million, and when the company refused, he decided to file a lawsuit.

The former housekeeper of one of the richest people in the world, Jeff Bezos, has been sued by Mercedes Vedda. Bloomberg writes about it.

The Hispanic woman has been working for the Amazon founder since September 2019 and has now filed a complaint in a Seattle court saying she was racially discriminated against by her employees.

In addition, he claims that he was forced to work long hours in unsanitary conditions without breaks or lunch. And the woman also led a group of five maids.

“The staff does not have a special rest room and their own bathroom. Because the housekeepers are not allowed to enter the main part of the residence when the Bezos family is there, and they are not allowed to use the toilet in the security room, they had to climb out the window and use the bathroom in the gardeners. Lacking easily accessible bathrooms, housekeepers often get urinary tract infections. And because they don’t have a canteen or break room, they have to eat at the laundromat. Hispanics are treated worse than whites and their boss often behaved “aggressively and abusively,” the maid said.

“We have investigated these claims, they are baseless, and we will defend ourselves,” said the lawyer representing Jeff Bezos, Harry Correll.

“Labor and employment laws state that workers must be paid for the work they do and must be able to do that work in a safe, clean and healthy workplace,” added Mercedes attorney Patrick McGuigan.

Now Mercedes is demanding back wages and benefits, as well as monetary damages.

“Vedaa earned ‘six figures a year’, was in charge of her own breaks and meals, and that she and her staff had access to several bathrooms and rest rooms. Ultimately fired him after three years on the job and believes he was fired for a “ridiculous made-up excuse” that he “looked sullen” and was a bad influence on the housekeeping team,” Correll said.

Bezos responded that the maid was fired for objective reasons.

“He originally asked for more than $9 million, and when the company refused, he decided to file this lawsuit,” the billionaire’s lawyer said.

Recall that five days after the departure of Amazon founder Jeff Bezos from the post of CEO of the company, his fortune increased by $ 10.6 billion.
