The decision to return to his home country during the war was the most difficult of his life.
Ukrainian singer Dmitry Monatik for the first time said why he did not return to Ukraine immediately after the start of the Russian war. At that time they were in Spain. He spoke about this in an interview with Masha Efrosinina.
“We came to Barcelona. My dreams are based on children lately. I dreamed that they would see Disneyland, that they would come with us on an American tour and go with them to Universal Park… On the 23rd we made plans. On the 4th was supposed to be a wedding in Mukachevo, where I was supposed to perform. On the 24th, my husband woke me up and said that the war had started and our cities were being bombed … These feelings are difficult to describe in words. So we were abroad, but how did the people inside feel?” he shared.
Later he decided to return to his native Kyiv, but without a family. This decision, according to the singer, was difficult.
“I wanted to come and be useful, many people hesitated. We agreed that now I should be with them. We agreed that we would help as much as possible. And it calmed a little. We really did a lot. We started doing charity tours. now, because this is what I can do. He clearly knows that I will never forgive myself if I did not go to Ukraine during the war and look into the eyes of our people. I will not hear the siren. I I can’t live with it. I just know that if I don’t feel it, I will never believe in myself. I give concerts in Europe, but I haven’t been able to give a concert in Ukraine. How is this? After all , I am a Ukrainian artist. Even though my family and I are far from each other, we are only physically, not morally, we are always connected. Yes, the war is a terrible thing,” he said and burst into tears.
He added that the decision to return to Ukraine during the war was the most difficult in his life.
“Return to Kyiv now or return later – it’s a very difficult choice. At a crossroads. You have to go somewhere, but where … When I returned to Kyiv, it became easier,” added artist
