He said that the publishing house’s books are read more by women, but they buy them with their men’s money.
The CEO of the Ukrainian publishing house Yakaboo Ivan Bogdan ended up in a high-profile sexist scandal because of his comments about women. He joked that women read more books than men spend. The video went viral online.
He expressed this opinion at the meeting of Ukrainian popularizers at the reading of the book Ukrainian: after the war, far from Moscow.
In particular, Bogdan answered a question related to the general picture of the readers of his publishing house.
“More (books – Ed.) are bought by women. Well, as usual, they spend the money that the men earn,” said Bogdan.
These words were noticed by a TikTok blogger, a popularizer of reading in Ukraine bezkhvosta.books. In addition, this statement offended many Ukrainian women who love to read and buy new books for themselves with their own money.

Now most Ukrainians have declared that they will never order new editions from Yakaboo again. They are angry that Bogdan considers normal sexist jokes and shames his own target audience.
