In Berlin’s Charlottenburg district, the family-run Hotel Wilmina, originally a women’s prison, has opened. The courtyard of the liberty detention area was turned into a restaurant, and the adjacent criminal court into a gallery, the rooms were created from former prison cells, writes the Daily Mail.
The jail and court complex, designed by architects Adolf Bruckner and Eduard Fürstenau, was built in 1896. It is steeped in German history – the back section of the complex was used as a prison for resistance fighters in Second World War.
After the prison was closed in 1985, part of its property began to serve as a land registry archive.
Now, Berlin-based Gruntuch Ernst Architects has turned it into a 44-room hotel.
Each room is different and combines historical authenticity with modern luxury and comfort. Rooms are decorated in soothing light colors and soft textures.
“Berlin-based architects Gruntuch Ernst devoted a lot of energy to this area. In a sensitive dialogue with history, they managed to radically change it from a prison to a place of grief in a hotel and restaurant. The process involves changing the spatial configuration and its meaning in such a way that an anti-social space can become an attractive place – a jewel for a deliberately chosen retreat,” the hotel said in a statement.
