It was a different time: long journeys, months-long crossings. Seas, oceans, raging elements to face. It was the time of the sailing fleet. Today, few of the giants of the seas have survived the rise of steam and then diesel. Rarer still are the three-masted training ships that can explore the world’s seas and help train new generations of sailors.
Amerigo Vespucci, baptized in 1931, is one of them. It is even one of the most advanced training ships in the world, flying the colors of Italy. Welcoming young Italian cadets on board, it perpetuates the adventurous spirit of the Florentine explorer who gave his name to America; Amerigo Vespucci. This training yacht instills excellence, a spirit of tradition and a sense of service to the community in young Italian officers during their training. This is the essence of the Italian vision of perseverance.
Italian-Swiss watchmaker Bulgari has decided to pay tribute to him with a special edition of 1000 of its Bulgari GMT. Water resistant to 100 meters, its discreet 40mm case houses the BVL 192 caliber automatic, while its dial bears the colors of Italy and the ship. Each of the 1,000 examples of this series is presented in a mahogany box emblazoned with the ship’s motto: “No chi cominicia ma que che persevere” (Not the one who starts, but the one who endures).
Offered on a rubber strap, this aluminum GMT allows a second time zone to be read thanks to a luminescent arrow-shaped hand that completes a full rotation of the dial in 24 hours. Two contrasting black and yellow zones at 12 o’clock distinguish between day and night, thus evoking Vespucci’s gold and jet black bars. The GMT hand is self-adjusting when the watch’s titanium crown is pulled out to the second position. The titanium case bears the signature “Nave Scuola Amerigo Vespucci” as well as the ship’s motto.
