Prince Harry has received an apology and compensation from News Group Newspapers over allegations of illegal information collection and invasion of his privacy.
Prince Harry has agreed to a settlement with publisher News Group Newspapers that includes a formal apology and financial compensation. The New York Times reported it.
The publisher acknowledged the illegality of the actions of the private investigators hired to hack Harry’s phone and collect personal data, and also offered a “full and unequivocal apology.” This is the first time that the News Group, including the owner of The Sun tabloid, has publicly admitted guilt.
In addition, the publisher apologized for the intrusion of journalists into the private life of the Duke’s mother, Princess Diana.
“We acknowledge and apologize for the distress caused to Duke, as well as the damage caused to relationships, friendships and families, and agree to pay substantial damages.”
The parties announced the settlement the day after the trial began. Thus, Harry avoids financial risks, because, according to British law, he must cover the costs of both parties if the compensation awarded by the court is lower than the proposed settlement.
The amount of Harry’s fees was not disclosed. In addition, former Labor Party deputy leader Tom Watson, who accused the publisher of intruding into his private life between 2009 and 2011, also received compensation.
It was previously reported that forest fires are threatening Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s estate in the beautiful Montecito area.
