An 18-karat gold pocket watch, originally gifted to Captain Sir Arthur Rostron of RMS Carpathia, returned to Tiffany & Co. after more than 100 years. The piece, a symbol of heroism and gratitude, was acquired by the jewelry company at an auction in the United Kingdom for US$1.97 million (approximately R$11.7 million), setting a record as the most expensive Titanic-related item ever sold.
The watch was a gift from three survivors of the vessel to the captain Rostronin recognition of his bravery in commanding the rescue of more than 700 people after the sinking of the transatlantic liner in 1912.
The delivery took place at the mansion of the widow of John Jacob Astor IVthe richest man aboard the Titanic, in New York. In addition to the clock, Rostron He was honored with the United States Congressional Gold Medal for his heroic action.
