Hollywood star Tom Cruise received the highest civilian award from the US Navy for his significant contribution to the popularization of military service.
According to CNN, the award ceremony took place in London, where the actor accepted the award from the hands of US Navy Secretary Carlos Del Toro.
Cruise was recognized for his “outstanding contributions to the Navy and Marine Corps” and raising public awareness of the service through film.
As the Secretary noted, “His work inspired a generation to serve in the Navy and Marine Corps,” and his efforts in the film industry “increased public awareness and appreciation for highly trained Navy personnel and the sacrifices they make while in uniform.”
Cult movie Top shooter (1986), in which Cruise played the title role, had a major impact on the popularization of the military pilot profession, leading to increased recruitment in the Navy. It was previously reported that the trailer for the eighth film in the franchise had been released Mission impossible where the new name was officially confirmed – The final reckoning.
