Next Saturday, the 14th, the costume that was used in the production will be auctioned and the initial value of the piece is surprising and exceeds hundreds of thousands
The famous Santa Claus costume worn by Jim Carrey in “The Grinch” (2000) will be auctioned on Saturday, December 14, and promises to be one of the most sought-after items of Christmas movie memorabilia. Custom-made for the actor during the filming of the film, the costume has an initial bid of US$55,000 (approximately R$324,000, according to the current price).
The set includes the classic red jacket with white details, the Christmas hat and green leggings, made from Lycra with yak hair dyed olive green, designed to imitate the Grinch’s skin.
The lot also includes the black leather belt, which became a symbol of the character, and authenticity labels signed by the designer. John David Ridge and for Jim Carrey.
Although the costume is not in perfect condition, it does show filming marks, such as tears caused by memorable scenes, including the Grinch’s clumsy attempt to climb down the chimney to steal presents. These traces of use only increase the value of the piece, making it even more attractive to collectors who value originality.
Box office success
The costume is considered a masterpiece in design and special effects, the result of detailed work by Ridge and the team of Rick Bakermaster of visual effects. The coat is made from a plush, luxurious fabric, while the belt is made from authentic leather, highlighting the care taken in manufacturing.
“The Grinch” was a huge box office success, grossing more than US$345 million worldwide and establishing itself as a Christmas classic. This auction offers fans the unique chance to purchase a historic piece linked to one of the most beloved (and grumpy) characters of the festive season.
