The singer admitted that while she was married to Sonny Bono, she felt so sad and depressed that she thought about suicide several times.
American singer Cher made a shocking confession about her past, Metro reports.
In her memoirs, she shared that during her marriage to musician Sonny Bono, she felt “trapped” and seriously considered suicide.
The couple began to live unofficially in 1964, and then, after the birth of their son, they legalized their relationship. However, their marriage quickly begins to crumble due to Bono’s jealousy and control. In 1972, while in a Las Vegas hotel room, the singer first felt so depressed that he stepped out onto the balcony and seriously considered the idea of jumping.
“I was 26 years old and in a loveless marriage. I walked barefoot to the balcony of our room and looked down. I was dizzy with sadness. I saw how easy it was to cross the line and just disappear. For a few exhilarating minutes . . , I couldn’t think of any other option,” Cher recalled.
He admitted that such thoughts haunted him five or six more times, but each time he was stopped by thoughts of his son Chez, mother, sister and loved ones.
The decision to divorce was a turning point in Cher’s life. She realizes that instead of enduring a marriage that destroys her soul, she can regain her freedom and happiness. The couple officially divorced in 1975, after which the singer began to build a new life, focusing on creativity and raising her son.
It was previously reported that Cher announced her memoirs, which will be released in two parts: the first in November, and the second in the spring of 2025.
