On October 10th, the Cinemateca Brasileira will be the stage for the documentary premiere “A Brief History of the LGBT+ Press in Brazil”, directed by the filmmaker and journalist Lufe Steffen. This cinematographic work is dedicated to exploring the evolution of publications aimed at the LGBTQIAPN+ community in the country, ranging from the beginnings with mimeograph machines to the digital era.
The documentary, a 110-minute feature film, features interviews with a diverse range of experts, including renowned journalists, sociologists, anthropologists and activists within the LGBTQIAPN+ movement. Among those testifying are prominent figures such as the actress Nany Peoplethe writers João Silvério Trevisan and James Green, as well as other significant names from the cultural and activist scene.
The concept of the documentary emerged in 2020, during the social isolation imposed by the pandemic. In that period, Lufe Steffen began in-depth research into the LGBTQIAPN+ press, which resulted in the production of a video for its YouTube channel in 2021.
The project gained momentum when it was included in first place in the São Paulo Cultural Action Program (ProAC) notice in 2022, making filming possible in 2023 and completed in 2024. “A Brief History of the LGBT+ Press in Brazil” traces a timeline that begins in the 1960s, with artisanal productions such as “O Snob”, created by Agildo Guimarãesuntil reaching the present day with digital vehicles.
Famous magazines
The narrative includes notable episodes such as the one that occurred in August 1983, known as the Brazilian Stonewall, when lesbian activists defied censorship at Ferros Bar in Rio de Janeiro.
The film also revisits important publications such as the magazine “Sui Generis” from the 1990s and the “G Magazine”, culminating in the analysis of the influence of the internet with the “Mix Brasil” portal and other media that emerged in the following decades.
Lufe Steffen not only did he direct this documentary, but his career is also deeply rooted in the history of the national LGBT+ press. For seven years, he worked at “Mix Brasil”, the largest Latin American portal focused on this community.
