The writer and journalist, Amanda Pickler launches his newest sapphic novel, a work that provides the opportunity to reflect and discuss themes present in our society, such as generational clashes, political radicalism, life and death, abstraction of time, among others.
The writer creates a way to show the new generation of adults that there is no more time to fail, since everything is happening so fast, and soon this will be the current scenario in our lives. On the other hand, there is a desire for the world to slow down, since there is no more time for failure.
In interview for Máxima, she says: “The kickoff of ‘Abstract Time’ comes from my own frustrations, from a time when I felt I had no control over my life, so Victória, as the protagonist of the book, has a lot of me in her. Her entire journey is driven by love — not just romantic love —, something that served as a device to symbolize the complexity of life and time itself. It was human connections that kept me going, and this is reflected in Vic.”
Plot of the work
The story shows the protagonist Victoria Contia young woman who is dissatisfied with her current job as a reporter for an entertainment magazine. Her low ambition and revolt against the social pressures present in adult life.
As tired as she is of her monotonous life, she lives according to her job, since her family guarantees her safety protection and also her friendship with her best friend, Isabel.
After time decides to play a trick on her, she is asked: a curse or a gift? This happens because as soon as she wakes up, the protagonist realizes that she is no longer in the year she belongs to, a decade has passed. Her appearance is different, her face has aged, her hair has changed, her career has flowed. In the meantime, she realized her attraction to other women.
With so many changes that had happened in her life, she had a new mission: to write a book before her contract with the publisher ends. It turns out that Victoria is going through a time of trying to fix and preserve her marriage, which is worn out.
Along the way, she encounters surprising people, such as a nosy girl from Rio de Janeiro and a gay evangelical. All of this ends up messing with the protagonist’s head, questioning her sanity and causing her to suffer from anxiety attacks. Victória’s goal, regardless of the past or future, remains the same question – the true meaning of life.
About the author
Amanda Picklergraduated in Journalism from Universidade Presbiteriana Mackenzie, has worked in several areas, including video editor for Grupo Perfil (Caras and Rolling Stones). She is currently changing careers, studying for a postgraduate degree in Translation and completing a second degree in Editorial Production. The book “Tempo-abstrato” is her first novel. Finally, she concludes:
