Queen Margrethe II announced her abdication in favor of her 55-year-old son in a New Year’s address to the nation.
Queen Margrethe of Denmark was hospitalized after she fell at Fredensborg Castle on September 19, DailyMail reports.
His condition is stable, but he will remain in the hospital under the supervision of doctors. Due to the Queen’s hospitalization, her planned visit to Aarhus University was cancelled.
Queen Margrethe II, who abdicated in favor of her son in her New Year’s speech, has ruled Denmark for 52 years. After her abdication, she retained her title and is now called Her Majesty Queen Margrethe. Crown Prince Frederik and Queen Consort Mary ascended the throne two weeks later, on 14 January 2024.
