Rob Halford and his journey as a metal icon and gay man

The legendary vocalist talks about accepting his sexuality and its impact on the Heavy Metal community

Rob Halford, lead singer of Judas Priest and a central figure in the development of heavy metal, is widely recognized not only for his musical contributions, but also for his courageous decision to come out as gay. Halford, who helped define the visual style of metal in the 1970s and 1980s, kept his sexuality a secret for many years until he came out publicly in an interview with MTV in 1998.

In his statement, Halford revealed that he had always known about his sexual orientation, but only recently felt comfortable discussing it openly. “There is still a lot of prejudice in the music industry, but it is something we all have to address in our own lives,” he said, emphasizing the importance of facing and overcoming these challenges.

The reception to his coming out in the metal community has been surprisingly positive. “I was probably mistaken in thinking I would be rejected. Nothing could be further from the truth. When you make that choice to come out, you create a kind of self-imposed negative fear,” Halford reflected, noting that he has been widely embraced by fans and peers.

Halford recently recalled that his decision to come out publicly was made easier by the fact that he was out of Judas Priest at the time. He believes that if he had been in the band, he might have hesitated to make the announcement. “There’s no doubt that I’ve become a better person for letting go of all those barriers that I had created around myself for my own protection,” he said in an interview with Metal Hammer magazine.

Halford also shared how his experience has inspired others, receiving letters and messages from fans who, motivated by his courage, were able to come out to their families and friends. “When I first came out officially, it was before the internet, and I would get letters from heavy metal fans saying, ‘I’m just like you,’ or ‘Because of what you did, I was able to tell my mom and dad,’” Halford recalled, highlighting the positive impact his honesty has had on the lives of others.
