New biography reveals the dark and human side of Lou Reed

The work is considered the definitive biography of the influential Velvet Underground musician

The new biography “Lou Reed: The King of New York” offers an in-depth and nuanced look at the life and work of one of rock’s most iconic and controversial artists. Written by music journalist Will Hermes, the book features exclusive access to the Lou Reed Archive at the New York Public Library for the Performing Arts, which contains previously unreleased recordings, personal letters and other documents.

Lou Reed, known for his work as the frontman of the Velvet Underground, is described in the book as a complex and multifaceted figure, whose creations and personality were marked by ambiguities, exploring themes such as sadomasochism, the queer world, and marginality.

Specialist critics have praised Hermes’ work, calling it the definitive biography of the artist, highlighting his meticulous research and access to previously unpublished materials.

Hermes reveals in detail the various phases of Reed’s career, from his association with Andy Warhol and the creation of the classic Banana Album, to the moments of introspection in which the musician saw himself more as a writer than a rock star. The biography also explores Reed’s personal struggles, including his battles with depression and low self-esteem, themes reflected in his most iconic compositions.

The book “Lou Reed – The King of New York” (buy here) offers readers a deeper understanding of a queer artist who, even after his death in 2013, continues to influence generations with his music and his life marked by contradictions and genius.
