Raphael Perez was married to Assaf Henigsberg, who also served as a model for some of his paintings.
Perez paints urban landscapes in a naive style, depicting life on city streets, parks and public places in a bright color palette. Many of his works are grouped into series – men and women, gay families, spherical paintings of Tel Aviv and Jerusalem as multicultural centers.
His talent waited a while to fully blossom; he only began painting at the age of 23. His early works focused on human relationships, sometimes using flowers as a metaphor. He began painting while he was still living with a woman, reflecting the heterosexual union in his works.
But he has always felt the inner conflict that lies within it. Today he describes his art as “a reflection of the entire gay community – people in the closet, mature love, gay families, gay political icons and cultural icons”. He lists Nahum Gutman and David Hockney as major influences on his work.
Since 2016, it has had a permanent exhibition at the Jerusalem International Convention Center.
