Gay TV host interrupts broadcast due to panic attack

Australian TV meteorologist Nate Byrne praised for his transparency in dealing with crisis on live TV

ABC News Australia weatherman Nate Byrne, an openly gay presenter, had a vulnerable moment during a live broadcast on Tuesday. In the middle of his presentation on ABC News Breakfast, Byrne interrupted the weather forecast after suffering a panic attack, informing viewers of his condition and asking for a break.

“I’m actually going to have to stop for a second,” Byrne said during the broadcast. “Some of you may know that I occasionally get panic attacks, and that’s happening right now.” He then handed the floor to his co-host, Lisa Millar, who continued the show with ease, praising Byrne’s openness about his mental health.

The moment quickly gained traction on social media, with many people praising the presenter’s courage in sharing his experience live on air. Millar referenced an article Byrne wrote for the ABC website in 2022, where he detailed his first experience with panic attacks and how he sought treatment to continue working in the profession he loves.

In the article, Byrne reported that she had no idea how her brain could take over in situations of anxiety, but that by talking openly about her condition and seeking help, she learned to cope with those feelings.

Following the incident, Byrne returned to the air to speak to Millar and co-host Michael Rowland, apologizing if he had frightened anyone and thanking his colleagues for their support. Millar reiterated his support, highlighting the importance of his honesty about his panic attacks.

“It’s great for people to know that this can happen to anyone,” Millar said, underscoring the importance of open discussion about mental health, especially in high-profile contexts like Byrne’s.
