Piece with Luiz Fernando Almeida is courageous in bringing to the debate a topic that has been kept under the carpet
It is impossible to leave Luiz Fernando Almeida’s presence in “O Filho da Geni” without a sense of urgency, a certain revolt and a bitter taste in the throat – that stifled throat of LGBTQIA+ people who remain silent in the face of the weight of prejudice. The play, which is showing in São Paulo until September 1st, is a more than welcome invitation to shout about the issue of sexual violence against children and adolescents.
For those who continue reading this text after knowing its main subject, because the topic arouses the most diverse reactions, it is necessary to say that Geni’s son weaves his story in a cloth of reality, rawness and despair. Luiz mixes a sheet with blood with a soundtrack to provoke (it is impossible to remain calm in the face of this) and shout out the character’s violence – so common among LGBT+ people.
Crushed by an inflatable shadow like pain, everything is urgent, everything is heavy and challenging, everything is controversial for him in a society that insists on not talking about sex, not discussing sexuality, not guiding children about limits for their bodies. It insists on silencing victims – or even blaming them – and on diminishing the guilt of the aggressor.
What is the voice of Geni’s son, a woman with no money, no prospects for love, in the world? Who has the courage to say that he was abused? Luiz Fernando breaks the strong bond of hypocrisy and shouts, or rather, gives the character a voice so that he can shout – but will everyone hear?
Directed by Mathues Lípari and written by Diego Lourenço, the show is a powerful, distressing story that is still common today. It lasts 60 minutes inside the SP Escola de Teatro, in Praça Roosevelt, and an entire life in your head.
