Miley Cyrus compares Hannah Montana and RuPaul’s Drag Race

Queer icon Miley Cyrus, known for her role as Hannah Montana, compared her experience playing the character to appearing on a show like RuPaul’s Drag Race. The 31-year-old artist was honored as a Disney Legend at the D23 convention on August 11, becoming the youngest person to receive the honor, which is given to individuals who have made “a significant impact on the Disney legacy.”

During the event, Cyrus expressed her gratitude in a speech after country singer Lainey Wilson performed the show’s theme song “The Best of Both Worlds.” The Grammy winner recalled her Disney journey and compared filming Hannah Montana to the drag competition: “I came to California to film the pilot and fell in love with L.A. But the soundstage was where I lived. There were lights, dressing rooms, coat racks. There were costume fittings, wig fittings, dancing, singing lessons. It was like being on RuPaul’s Drag Race Junior. And I won.”

Cyrus continued, saying she is still proud to have played Hannah Montana: “This award is dedicated to Hannah and all of her incredible and loyal fans, and to everyone who made my dream a reality. To quote the legend himself: ‘This is the life.'”

A darling of the LGBTQIA+ community, Miley Cyrus has the experience to make this comparison, having been a guest judge on the premiere of the 11th season of RuPaul’s Drag Race in 2019. In addition to her career as Hannah Montana, the artist continues to influence and inspire both in the music scene and on television.
