Kelley Robinson, president of HRC, emphasized the purpose of the event: “Tonight is about showing the strength of our community and our unwavering support for Vice President Kamala Harris.” The fundraiser comes after Joe Biden announced he will not seek re-election, with Harris emerging as the likely Democratic nominee to face former President Donald Trump in the upcoming election.
The event raised over $300,000 in just two and a half hours, demonstrating the significant support for Harris’ candidacy. Sam Alleman, national director of LGBTQ+ engagement for the Harris campaign, called the event a historic moment of solidarity. “Team Harris is stronger with the unmatched organizing spirit of LGBTQ+ organizers,” he said.
The fundraiser was attended by notable figures such as former CNN anchor Don Lemon, former soccer player Ashlyn Harris and actor Wilson Cruz. Cruz highlighted Harris’ commitment to the LGBTQ+ community: “She lives and breathes this fight every day, I’ve seen it up close.”
Modern Family star Jesse Tyler Ferguson also attended and made a humorous statement, saying that the text messages of support for Harris were his. The event also featured a special appearance by iconic Wonder Woman star Lynda Carter, who praised Harris as a champion of equal rights.
