Following last year’s release of a Barbie doll with Down syndrome, Mattel has announced a new doll in the line – Blind Barbie.
Mattel, in collaboration with the American Foundation for the Blind (AFB) and the Royal National Institute of Blind People (RNIB), has developed a blind Barbie doll, reports the BBC.
The doll has many features that will make it a more accurate reflection of a blind person and is interesting for blind children or children with low vision to play with. Barbie will be sold with a cane and sunglasses and will be dressed in textured clothing that visually impaired children will feel comfortable with. In addition, the inscriptions on the box of the new Barbie are in Braille.
Lucy Edwards, a TV presenter and disability activist involved in the campaign, emphasized the importance of the doll for visually impaired children: “As a teenager, I felt isolated because of my sight loss and not I saw models that looked like me. I felt myself with my cane, but knowing that Barbie had a cane would make me feel different about myself and less alone in my journey of receiving my blindness Edwards lost his sight at age 17.
It was previously reported that Mattel announced the release of Barbie’s pregnant wife.
