Author advocates ‘letting nature take its course’ as a cure for gender dysphoria
Rowling, known for her anti-trans views, recently took to social media to criticise gender-affirming care for transgender young people. Her X-rated post came after the new Labour government’s decision to maintain the Conservative Party’s emergency ban on private prescriptions of puberty blockers for trans young people.
She shared a broadcast from Talk TV, where Labour’s culture secretary Lisa Nandy defended the ban, with the caption: “Times they are a-changin'”. Responding to criticism from psychiatrist Jack Turban, who cited studies showing puberty blockers improve the mental health of trans young people, Rowling said: “The vast majority of children outgrow gender dysphoria if they are allowed to go through puberty. The best cure is to let nature take its course.”

Rowling attached a 2022 study to support her position. However, a study published by the New England Journal of Medicine found that gender-affirming care improves the mental health of trans teens, increasing positive emotions, life satisfaction, and self-confidence.
Another analysis in the American Journal of Surgery, published in April, found that regret related to transitioning is significantly lower compared to regret about having children, abortions or knee surgeries.
