At 49, Ralf Schumacher becomes the most renowned driver in motorsport to come out as gay
Ralf Schumacher was married to Cora Schumacher from 2001 to 2015, and together they had a son, David, who went on to pursue a career in motorsport, reaching Formula 3 before dedicating himself to GT racing. Ralf, the younger brother of seven-time world champion Michael Schumacher, began his career in motorsport in the early 1990s and made his Formula 1 debut in 1997, where he remained until 2007.
During his F1 career, he participated in 182 races, achieving 6 victories, 6 pole positions and 27 podiums, with his best results in the World Championship being two fourth places in 2001 and 2002, both for Williams.
After leaving Formula 1, Ralf competed in the DTM until 2012. Since then, he has worked as a commentator for British broadcasts and as a career manager for his son.
Ralf Schumacher is now officially the first openly gay driver in Formula 1 history. Before him, driver Mike Beuttler, who competed in the category in the 1970s, can be considered a pioneer, despite never having spoken publicly about his sexuality. After retiring from the sport, Beuttler moved to the United States, where he died in 1988, aged 48, a victim of the AIDS epidemic.
