“National Anthem” explores identity in Rodeo’s queer community

Film explores journey of self-discovery of young construction worker

The film “National Anthem,” directed by Luke Gilford, follows Dylan, a young construction worker in the American Southwest, played by Charlie Plummer. The narrative explores Dylan’s search for identity and belonging, highlighting his entry into a queer community of rodeo performers.

Dylan, 21, was raised in an environment that was not very accepting of his sexuality. At home, he faced disapproval from his mother (Robyn Lively) and coworkers. The pressure to provide for his family led Dylan to seek work on a ranch, where he found a community of queer people living in an environment free from the repressive norms of society.

The story, while centered on star-crossed lovers, focuses primarily on Dylan’s coming-of-age journey. Through his involvement with the community, he begins to explore his gender identity and consider what it would be like to live without societal expectations.

Dylan is drawn to the camaraderie and strong sense of identity within the group. He begins a romance with Sky (Eve Lindley), but the relationship is complicated by Sky’s open partnership with Pepe, the group’s leader. Cinematographer Katelin Arizmendi brings a surreal touch to the film, creating a dreamlike feel as Dylan becomes increasingly involved with the community.

In one striking scene, Dylan attends a rodeo, where majestic images of America are intertwined with scenes of queer romance, pride flags, and drag queens. This juxtaposition highlights the freedom and acceptance he finds in the group.

The story focuses primarily on Dylan’s coming-of-age journey.
However, Dylan’s relationship with Sky and family tensions force him to decide between staying in the community or returning to his alcoholic mother and younger brother. Dylan’s backstory is presented in a cursory manner, leaving some questions unresolved.
