Rita Von Hunt’s quote highlights the importance of the role of readers and writers: “Because there are other negotiating tables besides the officers’ tables and the war conferences […] and other weapons'”.
The public selected Tom Grito’s book, “I Know How to Get Out of This Alive”, to be read in this cycle. Tom expresses his pride in sharing his experiences with readers: “This exchange is a beautiful opportunity.” He reinforces the importance of addressing literature and gender identity to reduce prejudice and allow trans people to be seen as professionals, writers and poets.
Rita adds: “I am happy to see, expressed in people’s will, one of Raymond Williams’ maxims about culture being able to evaluate and diagnose ideas with seeds of life.” Suzana Vargas, curator and mediator of the Club, questions how gender identity reflects and determines literary creation: “In what way does gender identity reflect and determine creation?”
About the book
“I Know How to Get Out of This Alive” brings together oral texts by Tom Grito, including poems, letters and notes exchanged with other poets. Published in 2023, the book questions poetry itself as a kind of non-place, addressing themes such as the pandemic and the poet’s material survival.
The meeting with Tom Grito, Rita Von Hunt and Ramon Nunes Mello will take place on July 10, 2024, at 5:30 pm, at the Banco do Brasil Library, 5th floor, of CCBB RJ, with free admission.
