There were almost a thousand marriages and more than 200 gender changes registered last year
Same-sex marriages and name and gender changes on documents broke records in Rio de Janeiro registry offices in 2023. The data from the Civil Registry Transparency Portal was released on Friday (28), International LGBTQIA+ Pride Day.
In 2023, 980 same-sex marriages and 224 gender reassignments were performed. The number of same-sex marriages increased by 8.8% compared to the 901 registered in 2022 and by 364.5% compared to the 211 performed in 2013. In the first five months of 2024, 328 marriages have already taken place.
Since 2018, when the regulation of name and gender changes was implemented, there has been a significant increase in these registrations. In 2023, there were 224 changes, an increase of 21.1% compared to the 185 acts in 2022. In the first five months of 2024, 109 changes have already been carried out, setting a new record.
Marriages between female couples accounted for 58.3% of all same-sex marriages in RJ, with 4,373 celebrations registered until May of this year. In 2023, there were 603 marriages between female couples, an increase of 10.8% compared to the 544 carried out in 2022.
Marriages between male couples accounted for 41.7% of all same-sex marriages, with 3,132 celebrations up to May this year. In 2023, 377 ceremonies were held between male couples, an increase of 5.6% compared to the 357 held in 2022.
Since 2018, 712 gender changes have been recorded, with 405 changes from male to female (56.9% of the total) and 268 records from female to male (37.6% of the total). In 39 cases (5.5%), there was only a change of name, without a change of gender.
