American newspaper praises the Brazilian, highlighting her trajectory, influence and comparisons with RuPaul in particular
Pabllo Vittar, 30, was praised in a special published on Sunday, June 30, by The New York Times, which presents her as the “world’s next great drag queen”. The special features several photos of Pabllo Vittar getting ready and interacting with his fans during a show in Maranhão.
The report begins by describing Vittar’s moments at the São Paulo Pride Parade, held at the beginning of the month, highlighting how the drag queen has used her voice to influence young people, promote acceptance of sexuality and take political positions.
“RuPaul may still be the queen of queens, but his heir to the global crown has arrived,” the report states. To prove the drag queen’s success, The New York Times presents impressive data from the last seven years of Vittar’s career: seven studio albums (one gold, one platinum and two double platinum), his own collaboration with Adidas, global campaign with Calvin Klein and 1.8 billion reproductions of its songs.
Vittar’s shows are also remembered: performances in the United States, Europe, at festivals such as Lollapalooza and Coachella, as well as participation in iconic events, such as the biggest show of Madonna’s career in Copacabana and a performance at the United Nations during Queen Elizabeth II’s birthday.
The comparison with RuPaul extends to the numbers. According to the newspaper, adding up all social networks, Vittar has 36 million followers, three times more than the 63-year-old pioneering drag queen. However, the New York Times makes a point of highlighting that there is no rivalry between the drag queens, even though Vittar has never met RuPaul, who has always been one of her inspirations.
