The exhibition raises questions such as the paths taken by a book until it reaches the hands of a favela resident, the impact of funk on the self-esteem of young people and the power of creation in the outskirts of Manaus. The Funkeiros Cults collective will address the art and daily life of the outskirts of Manaus, curated by Dayrel Teixeira and co-curated by Leandro Mendes, from the Education Center of the Museu das Favelas.
“We are happy to share the opening of the exhibition ‘Funkeiros Cults’, which gives the spotlight to funk and explores various issues in the daily lives of peripheral youth. The occupation will be an opportunity for the public to have a new look at funk culture, starting from the union between art and the periphery in an authentic way”, celebrates Natália Cunha, director of the Museu das Favelas.
Organized into four axes, the exhibition features “Territory”, which explores everyday life in the outskirts of Manaus; “Art”, with recreations of classic paintings using the aesthetics of funk; “Identity”, presenting funk as a lifestyle; and “Literature”, which synthesizes iconic literary passages in images with a young, peripheral aesthetic. The public will be able to see previously unpublished works in large formats and videos produced by the collective, as well as an Instagrammable setting to connect with the universe of Funkeiros Cults.
On July 7th, State Funk Day, the Museu das Favelas will be at Expo Favela with activities integrated into the celebration. There will be a preview of the exhibition at the fair, organized by Central Única das Favelas (CUFA), promoting meetings with investors to accelerate favela projects.
The program includes the Straight Talk “Funk: Music and Identity” at 2 pm, with Bruno Ramos, Rubia Mara and Thiagson. At 3:30 pm, the book “Everything you always wanted to know about Funk… but were afraid to ask” by Thiagson will be launched, with mediation by Fabin Santin.
The Funkeiros Cults page has gained national recognition for its social media posts, which connect classic works to the daily lives of the outskirts of the city. “The exhibition arose from the need to document the outskirts and their daily lives, showing how art influences the margins of the margins and serves as a compass for our youth. Having an exhibition at the Museu das Favelas gives a sense of belonging,” explains Dayrel Teixeira.
“We believe in the transformative potential that arises from the dialogue and narratives of those who live and create in Brazil’s favelas. The Funkeiros Cults collective brings to São Paulo the daily life of the outskirts of Manaus, with an authentic exhibition that breaks the bubble of the collective imagination and invites the public to discover a reality beyond stereotypes”, says Ricardo Piquet, general director of the Institute of Development and Management (IDG).
