The second season delves deeper into the story of Catarina and Beatriz, dealing with the challenges of reality that affect their relationship. In addition, the series explores other groups, such as Patrícia (Joana Infante), who addresses deep and sensitive issues. Patrícia, initially presented as Beatriz’s best friend and partner, reveals in the new phase of the series the existence of a son with whom she has no contact, bringing up the discussion about abortion in cases of rape.
Mariana Berardinelli explains the decision to include this narrative: “I wanted to bring a problem to Joana’s character. I thought about how to justify the absence of her son in the first season and, at the same time, address important issues. I decided that she had become pregnant after being raped and was forced by her mother to keep the pregnancy.”
Joana Infante shared the emotion and responsibility of playing Patrícia: “When I found out about the rape and the decision to have an abortion, I was emotional. I knew the character would take on a bigger dimension and I wanted to treat the subject with respect. Patrícia chose to carry the pregnancy to term, but she made it clear to her son that she intended to have an abortion.”
The relevance of the topic is highlighted by Berardinelli: “This topic is always current. No woman should be forced to continue with a pregnancy resulting from rape. It is a subject that has been experienced daily and for years.”
The web series has been a success, with 1.2 million views in the second phase alone and around 15 million in total. In addition to the public, “Among Us” was recognized in the audiovisual world with 10 nominations at international festivals, including the “Best Screenplay” category.
