Production by Cia Epigenia in Rio de Janeiro debuts with Tyller Antunes in the role of a cisgender woman, a milestone for inclusion in Brazilian theater
Actress and singer Tyller Antunes, known for her work in the award-winning musical “Brenda Lee and the Palace of the Princesses” by Núcleo Experimental, has just joined the cast of the play “O Alienista” by Cia de Teatro Epigenia in Rio de Janeiro. Under the direction of Gustavo Paso, the production premiered in Rio and now arrives in São Paulo with a new cast, standing out for including for the first time a transgender actress in the role of a cisgender woman.
At 31 years old and with a 14-year career, Tyller Antunes plays a cisgender woman, marking a significant step forward for inclusion in national theater. This achievement is celebrated both by Brazilian culture and theater and by the trans/transvestite community, as it opens up space for transgender actors to play cisgender roles.
“The Alienist” premiered in Santo André at the Maestro Flávio Florence Municipal Theater on June 6, 2024. The play also had performances in São Caetano do Sul at the Paulo Machado Municipal Theater, and continues on tour through ABC, with performances in Mauá, São Bernardo do Campo, Osasco, São Sebastião, Diadema and the end of the season in São Paulo.
