Palácio do Catete was for years a stronghold of white, cis, straight men. No more!
The Museum of the Republic, in Rio de Janeiro (RJ), is witnessing an extremely necessary historical repair: the entry – into the luxurious halls and walls worked in European-inspired art – of the most real Brazilian population. Artists who truly represent Brazil.
It is among documents, books, photos and paintings that cover the History of our democracy, or when it failed, that exhibitions, events and various other initiatives have put the stunning Palácio do Catete back into the field of interest of tourists more in tune with the new times . Out comes the rococo, in comes the borogodó.
Until June 30th, “Hackeando o Poder”, a collective by Rede NAMI inspired by the book “Hackeando o Poder: Guerrilla Tactics for Artists from the Global South”, brings together the strength of indigenous, black, brown and Brazilian women in paintings and facilities that go beyond the hegemony of white, straight, cisgender men.
It’s worth taking your time, visiting each of the floors and rooms and, when you get tired of so much toxic masculinity, go up to see the famous room of former president Getúlio Vargas. Next to it, on a huge plaque, the name Marielle Franco is present.
Because you can’t change the past, but you can build the future! The address is Rua do Catete, 153 – Catete, Rio de Janeiro.
