LGBTI+ Alliance condemns attacks on Eduardo Leite amid tragedy

Contents claim that the calamity faced by the gauchos is a consequence of the governor’s sexuality

The National LGBTI+ Alliance spoke out against the homophobic attacks directed at the governor of Rio Grande do Sul, Eduardo Leite (PSDB), amid the tragedy caused by the heavy rains that have ravaged the state for two weeks. The civil organization issued a note of repudiation in response to content that alleges that the calamity faced by the people of Rio Grande do Sul is a consequence of the governor’s sexuality.

“We vehemently repudiate the criminal attempts to associate the natural catastrophe that is ravaging the state with the fact that the governor is a homosexual man”states the note.

The statement makes reference to a video that went viral last week, where a woman identified as Neiva Borges claims that the “wrath of God” was unleashed against the population of Rio Grande do Sul after the election of a homosexual governor.

“I am ashamed of being from Rio Grande do Sul and having Eduardo Leite as governor today, whose first lady is another man. I want to alert the Lord’s church on Earth, saying that this sin of having placed a man, whose first lady is a manin power, activated the wrath of God against the people of Rio Grande do Sul”, says the woman in the recording.

The National LGBTI+ Alliance requested that authorities investigate publications that promote this type of hate speech, as homophobia was equated with racism by the Federal Supreme Court (STF).
