William S. Burroughs stated that the book represents his life outside of heroin use
Daniel Craig will star in Luca Guadagnino’s next film, an adaptation of William S. Burroughs’ first novel, “Queer,” considered a quasi-sequel to Burroughs’s previous book, “Junkie,” published in 1953. This short novel was written between 1951 and 1953, but it was not published until 1985. Burroughs stated that the book represents his life outside of heroin use.
The story revolves around a man named Lee, who chronicles his life in Mexico City among expatriate American college students and bar owners who survive on part-time jobs and GI Bill benefits.
Insecure and self-conscious, Lee finds himself obsessed with a young man named Allerton, modeled after a recently discharged U.S. Marine from Jacksonville, Florida, whom Burroughs met in Mexico City. The role is by Drew Starkey.
In 2011, Steve Buscemi was tapped to direct an adaptation of “Queer,” written by Oren Moverman, and even conducted a script reading at the Sarasota Film Festival with Stanley Tucci and Ben Foster. However, the film was never made.
