“Inside the church, I never fit in, I was always that more Rock’and’Roll guy”
By Artur Vieira*
Singer Victor Vianna, 33 years old, has been going against the biggest religious figures on duty. Born in Santos, on the coast of São Paulo, he lived his entire life in the evangelical church and decided, in 2021, to seek more representation. He completely left his life as a gospel singer behind and embarked on new paths where he took control of his musical career.
Composer since the age of 16, he confesses that all his background and technique as an artist were shaped within the church; however, tired of so much hypocrisy from evangelicals, he opened the golden cage of religious temples and flew to other sacred stages: Rock.
“I’ve always been a Pop/Rock fan, even my musical style in gospel was always biased towards that style. Inside the church, I never fit in, I was always that more Rock’and’Roll guy”, recalls Victor.
NEW AGE
It is noticeable that a new era has begun for him, judging by the new compositions that began to appear in 2022 and today comprise four beautiful songs that bring in their lyrics themes such as: new paths, closed cycles and overcoming. All this mixed with the new image he has shown on his social networks, much freer and bolder! Victor increasingly appears in search of personal evolution and freedom without walls that hold him back. This was completed with his recently released video: “Eu”.
With a minimalist script and aesthetic look and extremely tasteful photography (directed by her talented husband, Robson Vianna), the clip shows the mosaic of several personas of the artist himself in 3X4, validating what the song’s lyrics say, bringing a atmosphere of fragments of other “selves” that exist within himself. It is easy to see the intention and provocation of the clip’s narrative, the artist wanted the viewer to also see themselves there in that context of self-discovery.
“People who are raised and shaped by the evangelical church think they can only stand out if they are connected to religion, I gave up on all that and embraced my new era! This is the only way I can do something for my LGBT+ community”, highlights Vianna.
NO STRINGS
The singer reinforces that the clothes of the gospel musical genre no longer suit him, and is already preparing a show with a band for the second half of the year where he intends to increasingly involve the LGBT+ public in his performances. He plans to perform in spaces and concert halls that have been blocked from him for a long time, he wants to watch other artists, due to the fundamentalist religiosity that he was part of. Because now the sacred bonds of the institution no longer bind the artist, who does not need any type of labels. In fact, it is this message that his new clip expresses.
