The exhibition “Visual Narratives and Feminine Identities”, scheduled for May 24th to June 1st, seeks to promote the appreciation and promotion of artistic production in Baixada Fluminense, with a special emphasis in the edition on visual arts and female protagonism.
The proposal is to hold an exhibition for seven days at Casa de Cultura Ney Alberto, in the Complexo Cultural Mário Marques, in Nova Iguaçu (RJ), dedicated exclusively to works by women from Baixada Fluminense. The objective is to broaden the vision of the territory, highlighting the importance of women in building local identity. The event seeks to offer a space for exchange between artists from the region and the local public, in addition to contributing to the dissemination of these narratives.
“Considering several factors, from the important role played by women in their diversity in the territory to the gender disparity in the universe of visual arts, the idea of the exhibition is to contribute to a movement to value artists from Baixada Fluminense and to the creation of a broader and more diverse scenario in the visual arts”, comments curator Sarah Martins.
The curatorship seeks to cover a variety of perspectives on the female presence in Baixada Fluminense, exploring aspects such as body, ancestry, daily life, work, family and community relationships, among others, guided by the approaches “Living Identities”, “Body and Movement” and “Art Urban”.
10 artists will be present in this edition: Priscila Rooxo, Thaís Basilio, Travadon4, Asmahen Jaloul, Mayra Karvalho, Taíssa Classo, Mel, Pietra Canle, Bia Gonçalves and Natália Lima. They were all born and/or lived in Baixada and have a story to tell through art, in addition to representing a multiplicity of artistic styles and practices.
On the 25th, the traditional creative fair will take place, which will feature 20 exhibitors, including artists, artisans, collectors, thrift stores, among others. The fair will feature vinyl DJing, with an open record player so that the public can also take their favorite records to listen to and share.
“Since 2019, Escambau has been promoting visual arts exhibitions and creative fairs in the streets and squares of Nova Iguaçu. In this edition, we celebrate the production of women artists from Baixada Fluminense, inviting everyone to delve into these plural narratives in which we identify ourselves moving through this territory”, adds Liz Córdova, production director of the event.
The exhibition “Visual Narratives and Feminine Identities” is held by the Federal Government, Ministry of Culture, Government of the State of Rio de Janeiro, State Secretariat of Culture and Creative Economy of Rio de Janeiro, sponsored by the City Hall of Nova Iguaçu, Municipal Secretariat of Culture and FENIG, through the Paulo Gustavo Law, and produced by Festival Escambau.
