LGBT+ suicide prevention stalls among deputies

Awareness programming project has been waiting for an opinion for almost a year

It has been almost a year since Minas Gerais has included the State Week for Valuing Life and Suicide Prevention for LGBT People in the Official Calendar of the State of Minas Gerais. A last movement of the proposalLegislative Assembly of the State of Minas Gerais was on July 10, 2023.

The initiative by congresswoman Bella Gonçalves (PSol) is currently awaiting an opinion at the House Constitution and Justice Committee and says that the Week will be “celebrated, annually, in the week of September 10th”. It provides that “public institutions will promote debates, lectures, seminars, public hearings, advertising and distribution of informative and explanatory leaflets”.

“The creation of a permanent campaign to combat LGBTphobia in the State of Minas Gerais will make a fundamental contribution to this issue”

The deputy highlights in her justification that “this fight for rights, visibility and confronting violence are historic for the LGBT population in Brazil and the world”, adding that “in 2022, LGBTphobia kills and caused 273 violent deaths of LGBTQIA+ people – 228 there were murders, 30 suicides and 15 other causes, such as death resulting from injuries caused by aggression”.

Bella also recalled that “the data is still alarming, because even with LGBTphobia being typified in the racism law, Brazil continues to be the leader in the ranking of murders of the LGBT population worldwide. In this sense, the Public Power, specifically the Legislative Power, in the use of its powers and in defense of this population, has the duty to combat all types of discrimination”.
