Buckingham Palace explains why royal portraits were edited

Retouching royal photos is “very important”, says the curator of a new exhibition at Buckingham Palace following the recent controversy surrounding Kate Middleton’s Mother’s Day photo.

Alessandro Nassini, curator of a new portrait exhibition at Buckingham Palace, explains why members of the royal family Photoshop their portraits. The Daily Mail reported this.

For the Windsors, photo editing — which can range from simply cropping an image to completely removing the background — is an important tool, she said.

Many of the images displayed in the Royal Gallery of Buckingham Palace have been edited, and retouching is also mentioned in the image descriptions.

However, when it comes to social networks, these rules are not followed for royal photos. Perhaps this is why subscribers of dukes and duchesses expect to see photos without Photoshop and are disappointed when they notice the opposite.

The same thing happened to Kate Middleton, who edited a picture of herself with her children for Mother’s Day.

The curator of the exhibition disagreed with the criticism leveled at the princess and explained why the Windsors use Photoshop.

“Retouch has been an important part of photography since the birth of photographic art. Retouch is very important for portrait photography, because it is how creativity is born. It is not a press print, not a reportage, not a photo for sale. It’s just a tool that photographers always use to realize his vision, to convey the aesthetic to its final reflection,” he explained.

It was previously reported that the photo of Kate Middleton with her children who went together on Mother’s Day appeared on the Instagram account of the Prince and Princess of Wales.
