Equality, freedom and justice must apply to everyone, regardless of sexual orientation, says EU
The European Union (EU) denounced that LGBT+ people continue to be stigmatized, calling for the fight against inequality and discrimination. The declaration accompanies the International Day to Combat Homophobia, this May 17th.
EU High Representative for Foreign Policy Josep Borrell called on all governments to “repeal any discriminatory legislation, take measures to combat and eliminate hate crimes and hate speech, prevent all forms of violence against LGBTI people and to break down the structural and institutional barriers and prejudices that still limit the participation of LGBTI people in decision-making and political processes”.
Borrell added that “equality, freedom and justice must apply to everyone, regardless of one’s sexual orientation, real or perceived, and gender identity.”
The EU, highlighted, welcomes, supports and works in collaboration with civil society and defenders of the human rights of LGBTI people, who “often continue to be the target of intimidation, harassment and threats”, defending the adoption of inclusive policies.
