Portuguese queer duo gets their foot in the door of conservatism

Aggressive Girls is intensely formed by Diana Santos (Diana XL) and Tânia Caldeira

“An uncompromising sound”, is how the Portuguese duo Aggressive Girls defines themselves, intensely formed by Diana Santos (Diana XL) and Tânia Caldeira. Their debut EP, released in January this year, is available on the Bandcamp page, where they describe their music as a fusion between “dirty, noisy beats” and a “raw, sentimental voice”.

They say that, while they vocalize “about their frustrations with the world and with those who face them”, it is the “dalliance between life and death” that fuels them. The punk aesthetic, with electronic elements and metal influences, remains faithful to the pop format.

Themes such as “what it’s like to be a woman artist” and “what it’s like to be a queer woman artist”, personal experiences such as “the housing crisis” and “precarious life” in Lisbon run through the lyrics of the songs, constructed during 2023.

After collaborating for the first time on the EP “Mastiga”, released by Tânia Caldeira last year as Dakoi, their “similar interests” and “way of working” led them to create a song together, “Não take a mal”, which convinced them to establish themselves as a duo under the name Aggressive Girls.

The debut EP “was born from the need to express your struggle” and “seek overcoming and peace after a difficult time”. “The strong, angry beats express his desire to finally win and find satisfaction,” they say. The project is also a contribution to the emerging queer and feminine universe, contrasting with the most listened to national artists.
