MST holds its National Meeting of Transvestites and Transsexuals

The objective is to debate sexual diversity and gender identity within a peasant movement

In order to debate sexual diversity and gender identity within a peasant movement, for the first time in history, the Landless Movement (MST) holds a National Meeting of Transvestites and Transsexuals. The event, in Fortaleza (CE), began on Monday (6) and runs until May 10, with the presence of people from all regions of the country.

Symmy Larrat, National Secretary for the Rights of LGBTQIA+ People at the Ministry of Human Rights and Citizenship (MDHC), was part of the meeting’s opening panel and said that as long as trans people are not everywhere, prejudice will still be more difficult to break.

“It is this coexistence that naturalizes human relationships. And this involves organizing politically in political forums for organizing society as a whole. The MST sets an example of this, holding its first national meeting of transvestites and transsexuals,” he declared.

The manager defined the meeting as a historic moment. “Our Secretariat could not fail to be present, demarcating space and supporting the MST, which has been a movement that has set an example of solidarity for the entire country. It was like this throughout the pandemic, helping to feed people and enabling them to survive; and it has been like that now, in Rio Grande do Sul, facing all this tragedy”, recalled Symmy Larrat.

The event debates topics such as: public policies for the trans and transvestite population in the countryside; human rights and health of the LGBTQIA+ population; conquered rights and possibilities of access to healthcare for the trans and transvestite population; organization of the struggle of transvestites and transsexuals in Brazil; MST and sexual diversity and gender identity, among others.
