Rodrigo Amorim committed a crime of political gender violence against Niterói councilor Benny Briolly
Rio de Janeiro state deputy Rodrigo Amorim (União Brasil) was sentenced by the Regional Electoral Court of Rio de Janeiro (TRE-RJ), on Thursday (2), to a penalty of one year, four months and 13 days fine , in an open regime, for the crime of political gender violence committed against Niterói councilor Benny Briolly (PSOL), in 2022.
The penalty was converted into two actions restricting rights: provision of services to an entity that serves homeless people and payment of 70 minimum wages. An appeal can be made to the Superior Electoral Court (TSE).
During a session at the Legislative Assembly of Rio de Janeiro (Alerj), on May 17, 2022, Rodrigo Amorim called the trans councilor a “boizebu” and a “freak of nature”. In the assessment of the rapporteur of the criminal case, judge Peterson Simão, the statement humiliated and belittled the condition of trans women.
On social media, Benny Briolly declared that the deputy’s conviction “is a milestone in the struggle of women in Brazil” and that with it “the need to build the Gender Political Violence Law is strengthened”.
“Amorim’s conviction comes in the case of harassment, embarrassment and humiliation of councilor Benny Briolly during a plenary session in Alerj. This victory is a milestone in the struggle of women in Brazil”, wrote the councilor.
“With it, the need to build the Gender Political Violence Law is strengthened, which guarantees the safety of women, especially black women and LGBT women, when entering and remaining in politics,” he added.
The councilor also recalled the episode in which Rodrigo Amorim, together with former impeached deputy Daniel Silveira and the then candidate for governor of Rio de Janeiro Wilson Witzel, broke a plaque in honor of the murdered councilwoman Marielle Franco (PSOL), in October 2018 .
“The parliamentarian had previously broken the street sign in honor of Marielle Franco. That is why this historic decision is, more than ever, a victory for Dandara, Aqualtune, Tereza de Benguela, Carolina de Jesus, Luiza Mahin, Marielle Franco and all who were and still are in the fight!”, concluded Benny.
