Caio Fernando Abreu wins monologue with unpublished texts

Through the hands of his friend, also from Rio Grande do Sul, Roberto Camargo, the writer’s works take to the stage with “Caio em Revista”

The writer and playwright from Rio Grande do Sul Caio Fernando Abreu (September 12, 1948, Santiago, Rio Grande do Sul – February 25, 1996, Porto Alegre) has one of the most important works of Brazilian Literature of the 20th century and its strength still reverberates – now by the hands of his friend, also from Rio Grande do Sul, Roberto Camargo. The actor debuts on May 11, at Teatro Viradalata, in São Paulo, the solo with new texts “Caio em Revista”.

Roberto writes the script drawn from the chronicles that Caio – considered a “photographer of contemporary fragmentation” – wrote for the magazines “AZ” and “Around”, by Joyce Pascowitch. Directed by Luís Artur Nunes, with directing assistance from Patrícia Vilela and production by Colaatores.

“I’ve been working on this project since 2017. That’s when I started researching the texts, then I adapted them for the theater, created the script and the pandemic came and caused everything to stop. In 2022, we began the editing process with alternating rehearsals at my director Luís Artur Nunes’ house and mine”, shared the actor on his personal blog.

“Then we started presenting rehearsals to friends, still in our homes. In the meantime, two producers signed us up for notices and awards for which we were not included. Until at the beginning of this year I said to myself that 2024 would never pass. And it didn’t happen! I rolled up my sleeves and decided to do everything possible to get this project out of the drawer and onto the stage.”

He also revealed that in order to access the texts, completely unpublished in books and only published in magazines in the 1980s, people such as Cida Moreira, Luiz Henrique Campos, Samuel Oliveira, Odilon Henriques, Marcos Breda and Humberto Vieira opened their archives to him.
