Director Renan Cordeiro is inspired by the “Pânico” franchise without reinforcing stereotypes
With a queer horror style approach, the short film “Carnaval Sangrento” was born at the hands of director Renan Cordeiro, a young filmmaker and publicist from Curitiba in his first work. It’s 48 minutes filmed entirely with a cell phone and made with the voluntary collaboration of a team of 20 people.
The film’s premiere took place in a horror-themed bar in Curitiba, where more than 160 people attended the screening. The plot unfolds during Carnival, while a secret haunts a group of young people who struggle to survive the night. Someone knows something they shouldn’t and turns the party into a real massacre.
Renan did not hesitate to explore the obvious references of the film that inspired it, “Scream”, as well as other horror classics, such as “Child’s Play”, “Psycho” and “Macabre Valentine’s Day” – adding a generous dose of terms and situations of drag queen nights.
Another positive aspect is the non-reinforcement of contemporary stereotypes, highlighting the plot without focusing on queer people as predators. The full short can be watched on YouTube.
