Town and church holidays

On this day, the Orthodox Church honors St. Basil Dekapolit, confessor.

On Vasily’s day, it is customary to bring a pine branch into the house: it cleans the air and gives health to the whole family. Medicinal infusions are prepared from pine needles and branches. A vitamin drink is popular: 20 g of pine needles are boiled in a glass of water and taken by two spoons three times a day. On this day, children with dropsy (this disease is also called sheep’s dyspnea) are treated. They did it this way: the mother wrapped the child in a sheepskin wrap and placed it on the threshold, while the father, meanwhile, drove the sheep out of the house and then drove them out into the street. The farmers believed that the animals brought the disease to them.

Traditions and rituals

On March 13, we rejoiced at the arrival of spring and watched the icicles. If they are long, soon it will be warm and the flax will shrink. If ice falls and hits someone, it is said to notice the lucky person.

On this day, women traditionally cook kalachi, which are shaped like ice cubes. They were treated with all relatives and neighbors. According to popular belief, if you eat kalach in the morning, your year will be good and you will live abundantly.

To make sure that happiness does not disappear from the family, they brought the icicles into the house, drowned them, and then sprinkled all the corners with melting water. The remaining water was poured on the front door and not wiped off.

On the day of Vasily Kapelnik, the snow on the roofs began to melt. This time they said: “On Vasily’s Day, look at the drops (icicles) – and the drops will come”; “Vasily will come and cry winter.”

Icicles were viewed not only for pleasure, but also to predict the harvest. So, long drops promised long flax.

Signs

  • If it rains summer should be nice
  • A round sun means a good harvest
  • Long icicles – for a long spring
  • If larks and rooks come, there will be no more cold weather
  • Moon with horns down – to heat
  • The rook has arrived – the snow will melt early, and the summer will be rainy.
