City and church holidays on February 26
The Orthodox Church celebrates the memory of St. Martinian of Caesarea.
Monk Martynian lived in the 5th century. At the age of 18, he settled in the desert near the city of Caesarea in Palestine, where he lived in labor and silence for 25 years and was awarded the gift of healing diseases.
The devil tried in every possible way to seduce the hermit, and one day, under the guise of a traveler, the prostitute Zoya approached him. He asked to spend the night in bad weather, and then changed into expensive clothes and began to seduce the ascetic.
To resist, the saint left his cell, lit a fire and stood barefoot on burning coals, asking the Lord to protect him from temptation.
The woman, amazed at such a sight, was ashamed and asked the saint to guide her to the path of salvation. With his instructions, he went to Bethlehem and served in the monastery of St. Paul.
After recovering from his burns, Martynian went to a deserted rocky island and lived in the open air for several years. He received food from the owner of the ship, to whom he gave the baskets he had woven.
One day, the waves on the wrecks of a ship brought a Christian woman named Photinia to the island. Martynian helps him get to the shore, but he himself rushes into the sea and is carried ashore by dolphins.
After this, the saint led the life of a traveler for two years and died in 422 in Athens.
