Its creation took 10 years of research and experimentation.
At New York Fashion Week, designer Christian Cowan presented the Adobe Project Primrose interactive dress in the FW24 collection. He showed the process of creating it on Instagram.
Adobe research scientist and engineer TJ Rhodes teamed up with Project Primrose co-developer Christina Dirk to create the world’s first interactive clothing.
The dress consists of two parts. The top has 1264 petals made of liquid crystal dispersion, laser-cut and hand-processed, which change their appearance as the model walks. Below are brilliant stars of the same silver color.
Adobe’s interactive dress hides a flexible circuit board under each set of petals, allowing Project Primrose to alternate between shades of gray and ivory.
The project to create such a dress began in 2013. Back then it was not a dress, but a sweater that could change its appearance depending on the weather, and then progressed to the creation of Project Glasswing in 2017.
