Town and church holidays
On this day, the Orthodox Church honors the memory of St. Sylvester, the Pope. He was one of the first saints to be glorified as saints rather than martyrs. He lived during the cruel persecution of Christians during the time of Emperor Diocletian.
When Emperor Constantine came to power, recognizing the Christian religion, Sylvester became a bishop. According to legend, Constantine himself was a pagan and persecuted Christians, but soon contracted leprosy and was miraculously cured after being baptized by Sylvester.
Traditions and rituals
In the folk calendar, this date is known as Sylvester Day or Chicken Day. In villages, chicken coops are cleaned and fumigated to protect the birds from disease and evil spirits.
