According to USA Boxing policy, trans boxers will need to undergo surgery to compete.
Trans boxers will need to undergo surgery and submit four years of quarterly hormone assessments before competing.
The new determination by USA Boxing, the regulatory body for Olympic boxing in the United States, indicated that fighters must undergo “sex change” surgery.
From January 1st, athletes must go through the procedure, which was not specified by the organization, and present the exams to compete.
USA Boxing did not specify what it meant by “gender reassignment surgery” and did not make clear what types of procedures would be accepted.
The new determination also imposes that fighters under 18 must compete in the categories according to the gender assigned at birth, without exceptions.
These new rules were developed based on the International Olympic Committee (IOC) 2021 Framework on Equity, Inclusion and Non-Discrimination on the Basis of Gender Identity and Sexual Variations.
