During an appearance on a podcast, the artist revealed that he was afraid of the public’s reaction when they discovered his homosexuality at the height of his career, in the 70s, where homophobia was very present in society.
“It wasn’t the same as it is today. Now being gay is no big deal. But in the 70s, it would have killed a career. And Clive (Davis) told me that in his own way, ‘Don’t do that.’ He was happy talking about music. But talking about my personal life was scary. So I never did,” he said.
Barry said he married his manager in 2014 in an intimate ceremony: “We’ve been together for so long and I never realized it would come out (publicly). But when we got married, it was a big moment.”
The singer revealed that, when he came out about his sexuality in 2014, the balance was positive in his career: “I didn’t know what was going to happen, but I should have known better because my fans, and frankly the general public, care about my happiness and I always knew that.”
